Compton City Council Approves Clean Energy Financing

Compton homeowners can access clean energy financing; Ygrene Works program introduces opportunities minus upfront costs

COMPTON – The Compton City Council voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution that will allow property owners here to install energy-saving improvements to their homes without upfront costs through Ygrene Works, a statewide Property Assessed Clean Energy financing program available to more than three million Californians.

The Ygrene Works Program allows property owners in participating cities to finance renewable energy, energy, and water efficiency improvements and electric vehicle charging infrastructures on their property and the costs are charged as an assessment against the property. Compton residents can now “opt-in” to the PACE financing program under a unique partnership with Golden State Finance Authority, formerly known as California Home Finance Authority or CRHMFA Homebuyers Fund. The process is a single step in making this financing option available for energy efficiency upgrades to homes and businesses.

Improvements include: solar panels, heating and air-conditioning, windows and doors, lighting, roofing, insulation, water saving, and landscaping and more. The cost of the improvements is repaid over a five to 30-year term on the homeowner’s annual property tax bill.

Compton Mayor Aja Brown said the program offers Compton homeowners affordable access to energy efficiency upgrades.

“This additional option will lead to increased local jobs and higher property values,” she said. “Compton residents are consumption conscious and are always interested in finding ways to reduce their costs and impact to the environment.

“Helping homeowners to make energy-efficiency upgrades and retrofits by making them more affordable and accessible is a win for the City, our residents and the environment,” Brown said.

Ygrene is the largest commercial and multi-family PACE provider and the only program offering 100 percent financing for all property types. It is the same as the recently adopted HERO (Home Energy Renovation Opportunity) program which also provides financing for home energy solutions such as solar panels and other renewable energy. Adopting the Ygrene program will now allow another choice of PACE providers for Compton property owners and businesses.

COMPTON The My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Initiative announces the 2016 Summer Empowerment and Peace Summit, scheduled for July 29-31 at the Dollarhide Community Center.

The Summit follows the MBK MenTouring Summer Camp, a recent three-day event that fostered self-awareness and the meaning of manhood for junior high school boys in Compton.  Boys in sixth through eighth grade were treated to a stimulating weekend of swimming, zip lining, mountain biking with the San Bernardino Mountains as the backdrop while being mentored on the basic fundamentals of responsibility, accountability, leadership, teamwork, and education.

In 2014, President Obama announced that more than 100 mayors, county officials, and tribal nations had accepted the MBK Community Challenge, an initiative to encourage community leaders across the country to develop plans to improve life outcomes and address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color, ensuring that all young people can reach their full potential.

In line with this initiative, Compton has launched an action plan to improve outcomes for children of color ages 0-25 and their families, with an emphasis on Black and Latino males. Currently, the city is focusing on three goals recommended by the White House. They are 1) Reading at grade level by third grade, 2) Improve access to jobs and valuable work experience, and 3) Reducing violence and providing a second chance.

The Summer Empowerment and Peace Summit is a follow-up to Mayor Brown’s 2014 action summit where she engaged the community in the development and shaping of the MBK Initiative in Compton.

Walmart Job Openings for New ‘Supercentre’

Approximately 300 full- and part-time job openings for the taking; store grand opening slated for January 2017

COMPTON — Walmart Supercentre has announced up to 300 job openings for local residents. To accommodate anticipated high interest, Walmart has opened a temporary hiring center at 420 S. Long Beach Blvd. Ste. 424, next door to O’Reilly Auto Parts.

Applications will be accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Interested applicants also may apply online at http://careers.walmart.com.  The majority of new associates, as Walmart employees are called, will begin work in December to help prepare the store for its grand opening.

According to store manager Diana Reyes the store will be hiring both full- and part-time associates. “We are excited to meet applicants and create a store full of associates to serve the Compton community” Reyes said.

Walmart provides a benefits program to eligible full- and part-time associates. For example, it provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits including health-care coverage with no lifetime maximum. Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to 6 percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly cash bonus based on store performance.

A job at Walmart means competitive pay and career opportunities. Last year, Walmart promoted 18,700 of its associates in California to jobs with higher pay and more responsibility. In addition, 10,000 in California were converted from part-time to full-time.

In addition, Walmart will offer a job to any eligible U.S. veteran honorably discharged from active duty since the Veterans Welcome Home Commitment began on Memorial Day 2013.
