Everyone’s career is going to be important, but it’s also important that you’re happy with what you’re doing. With this in mind, if you’re not currently enjoying where your career is taking you, then perhaps it’s time to look elsewhere; life is far too short to spend so much of it doing something you dislike. So, if it is time for a career change and you’re not sure which direction to go in, here are some ideas for what you might want to do next.
Start Your Own Business
The best idea available if you want to start a new career and there doesn’t seem to be anything around that will fit what you want, whether that’s in terms of the type of work you would be doing, the sector you would be working in, or even the hours you would want to put into it, is creating a career for yourself. So, why not start your own business?
In the past, this would not have been an avenue that was open to everyone, but today there are far fewer barriers to starting a business, and it can be done relatively inexpensively too, although it will depend on what you want to do and what you need to have in place before you can begin.
What’s truly wonderful about starting your own business is that you are entirely in control, and you can do whatever it is that makes you happy. If you want to be a personal trainer, start by taking a course with train. fitness and then setting up your own company. If you want to be a tutor, make sure you have the right qualifications and go ahead. If you want to run events or help people find mortgages or groom animals, the choice is entirely yours.
Build on Your Hobby
If you’re having trouble deciding what to do next, the answer might actually be right in front of you. Do you have a hobby? Could you turn that hobby into a business or a career? In many cases, this is completely possible, and it’s a good way to start when you’re looking for something new.
Although you could take your hobby and start a business with it as your core idea, if you prefer to work for someone else, your hobby can help there, too. If it’s something you love and, importantly, something you’re good at, you can start to look for advertised jobs in that specific niche. It could be cooking or sports or art or driving fast cars or anything at all. If you’ve got experience through your hobby, you’ll be much more attractive as a candidate when you apply for the job. Make sure all the relevant information is added to your resume.
Ask for a Promotion
Maybe, once you really start to think about it, it’s not the sector or even the company that you don’t like, it’s the simple fact that you don’t seem to be moving ahead within the path you’re on. If this is the case, you have two choices: you can either continue in the way you are, or you can speak to your employer and ask for a promotion.
It will be difficult to implement the latter, and very easy to do the former, but since the latter will make you happier in the longer term, it’s worth being uncomfortable for a little while to achieve your goal. There might not be a promotion forthcoming, but at least your boss will know you have ambitions and that might help you in the future.
